Matter and Radiation in Superstrong Magnetic Fields and Thermal Emission from Neutron Stars
نویسنده
چکیده
Thermal surface emissions have now been detected from more than a dozen isolated neutron stars, including radio pulsars, radioquiet neutron stars and magnetars. These detections can potentially provide important information on the interior physics, magnetic fields, and surface composition of neutron stars. Understanding the properties of matter and radiative transfer in strong magnetic fields is essential for the proper interpretation of the observations. We review current theoretical works on modeling magnetized neutron star atmospheres/surface layers, discussing some of the novel properties of matter and radiative transfer in strong magnetic fields. Of particular interest is the effect of the strong-field vacuum polarization, which dramatically changes the radiative transfer and the emergent X-ray spectra from magnetars.

Heat Blanketing Envelopes and Thermal Radiation of Strongly Magnetized Neutron Stars
Strong (B ≫ 10 G) and superstrong (B & 10 G) magnetic fields profoundly affect many thermodynamic and kinetic characteristics of dense plasmas in neutron star envelopes. In particular, they produce strongly anisotropic thermal conductivity in the neutron star crust and modify the equation of state and radiative opacities in the atmosphere, which are major ingredients of the cooling theory and s...
متن کاملCondensed Surfaces of Magnetic Neutron Stars, Thermal Surface Emission, and Particle Acceleration Above Pulsar Polar Caps
Recent calculations indicate that the cohesive energy of condensed matter increases with magnetic field strength and becomes very significant at magnetar-like fields (e.g., 10 keV at 3 × 10 G for zero-pressure condensed iron). This implies that for sufficiently strong magnetic fields and/or low temperatures, the neutron star surface may be in a condensed state with little gas or plasma above it...

We construct partially ionized hydrogen atmosphere models for magnetized neutron stars in radiative equilibrium with surface fields B = 1012−5×1014 G and effective temperatures Teff ∼ a few×105−106 K. These models are based on the latest equation of state and opacity results for magnetized, partially ionized hydrogen plasmas that take into account various magnetic and dense medium effects. The ...
متن کاملSGR1806-20: evidence for a superstrong Magnetic Field from Quasi Periodic Oscillations
Fast Quasi-Periodic Oscillations (QPOs, frequencies of ∼ 20−1840 Hz) have been recently discovered in the ringing tail of giant flares from Soft Gamma Repeaters (SGRs), when the luminosity was of order 1041 − 1041.5 erg/s. These oscillations persisted for many tens of seconds, remained coherent for up to hundreds of cycles and were observed over a wide range of rotational phases of the neutron ...
متن کاملPowering Anomalous X-ray Pulsars by Neutron Star Cooling
Using recently calculated analytic models for the thermal structure of ultramagnetized neutron stars, we estimate the thermal fluxes from young (t ∼ 1000 yr) ultramagnetized (B ∼ 10 G) cooling neutron stars. We find that the pulsed X-ray emission from objects such as 1E 1841-045 and 1E 2259+586 as well as many soft-gamma repeaters can be explained by photon cooling if the neutron star possesses...
